Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

Completely solo developed by me. All models, textures, scripts, and design choices were made from scratch. Unless otherwise stated.

(Textures for wall map and government papers were sourced online and modified.)

Project Blue Book is an exploratory VR game where you play as a government agent investigating reports of aliens. Following the instructions on your clipboard, explore and find all notable features within a dark cave! It was created for a class, but I hope to one day release it as a full game.

Created between November 13th and December 12th, 2024, development of Project Blue Book was rapid and stuck to my “about a month” rule. All while still working on my work for other classes.

Created for MI231: Game Design and Development, and showed in the MSU Fall Games Showcase.

I have always been a massive fan of aliens and the conspiracy theories surrounding them, so when we were given the opportunity for my class to make whatever game we wanted, I took it.

Blood, sweat, and tears.

The Office

The player begins the game inside of the office, this area serves as a tutorial and main menu. Different papers can be inserted into the fax machine to transport the player to different levels. Although there is only one finished level, multiple are planned for the one-day future release, and the original scrapped level 1 can still be accessed through a hidden paper behind the right-most filing cabinet.

The office is made to be as interesting as possible and play testers often would spend much longer than necessary here just messing around.

  • Players can open all cabinets and drawers, and papers fill all of them.
  • Players are given the camera and clipboard and a short introduction to how these systems work
  • Players are able to stick photos and papers to the corkboards on walls
  • A hidden radioactive cube in the tutorial introduces the system and is a fun minigame
  • A hidden paper that takes players to the scrapped original level 1 and encourages exploration outside of what they are directly told

The Cave

The main game is played inside of a dark Nazca cave. Players are given a lighter and led through one point of interest at a time, trying to take photographs of the correct things. Torches are scattered throughout the cave, and players can light them for a more stable form of light.

The cave features many different aliens in unique poses, always giving players something interesting to look at.

  • Sitting aliens posed into 4 equal rock cuttings in the largest room
  • A “mother alien” with 2 smaller children aliens by her
  • An alien with an imbedded metal implant in its chest
  • Multiple different poses for sitting and flat aliens
